Virendra and Saroj Shah

 

 

 

Mr Virendra Shah lives in Mumbai.  He is an accomplished violinist in the classical Hindustani tradition, having been playing the instrument for 60 years.  He is a disciple of the late Padma Bhushan Pandit V G Jog, who is widely recognised as one of the best Indian violinists who ever lived.

 

A qualified Chartered Accountant, Virendra bhai has pursued his passion for music with the same dedication as his professional career.  He plays over 150 ragas, of which 4 ragas have been composed by him.  His performances are marked by his own unique renditions (bandish) in various taals.

 

Virendra bhai has given performances all over India and abroad, as well as on All India Radio.  Along with his guru Pandit V G Jog, he has accompanied famous musicians in live performances such as Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ram Narayan and K Gopalkrishnan.

 

With a view to promote and encourage Indian classical music, Virendra bhai has established “Rupak Sangeetalaya”, an institution that grants scholarships to deserving students.

 

Virendra bhai’s wife Saroj completed her MA in Music in 1958.  She is an accomplished vocalist in Indian classical music and devotional songs (bhajans).  She has also performed on All India Radio and conducts music classes in Mumbai.
